  • Medal designed by F. Bianchi, dually dated year XI and 1854 in Roman numerals. It commemorates the announcement of the Doctrine of Immaculate Conception on 8 December 1854 AD. The Pope is exceptionally depicted standing, and not sitting as he must have been, because of a sunlight’s ray shone in his face during of very cloudy day in Rome. The appearance of this sunbeam was interpreted as a heavenly confirmation of the dogma.
