  • Turkey. A native of Lesbos, Barbarossa (red beard) worked under his elder brother Aruj as corsair. They took Algiers from the Spaniards in 1518 AD for the account of the Ottomans. He received the title Pasha from sultan Selin I in 1519 and was appointed admiral of the Turkish fleet in 1533 (Kapudan Pasha) by sultan Suleiman the magnificent. Barbarossa defeated twice the Genoese Admiral, Andrea Doria before retiring to Constantinople in 1545 AD. He died in the following year (1546 AD).
