  • France. Medal by G.-H. Prud’homme Commemorating M. Weygand, a French General, member of the French Academy. He was appointed as High Commissioner of the Levant in 1923-1924 and Chief of Staff of the French Army between 1931 and 1935. He played an important role in both the first and second world wars. General Weygand commended the French army during the German invasion in May 1940 and recommended the armistice after several defeats. He joined the Vichy regime as minister for defense until September 1940. He was appointed as Delegate-General in Vichy’s North Africa before being removed from office on Hitler’s orders. The Germans imprisoned him in Austria until May 1945. He was arrested in France for collaboration, then released in 1946 before being cleared of charges in 1948.
