  • Roman. Medal belonging to the series of Jean Dassier illustrating Roman history from the foundation of Rome by Romulus to the rise of Augustus. This medal commemorates military and diplomatic Roman victories over the Seleucids on two occasions. The first date refers to the Roman victory over Antiochos III at Magnesia and the treaty of Apamaea in Asia Minor (190/189 BC). The second commemorates the famous “Day of Eleusis” when the Roman ambassador C. Popillius Laenas met Antiochos IV while sieging Ptolemy VI at Alexandria and being on the brink of abolishing the Ptolemaic dynasty (169/168 BC). The Roman demanded an immediate withdrawal of the Seleucid who asked time for discussion with his generals. Laenas drew a circle around Antiochus IV announcing that he should give his decision before exiting the he will be at war against Rome. Antiochus IV accepted immediately and left Egypt back to Syria.
