  • Turkey. Muhammad II conquered Constantinople on the 29th of May 1453 AD ending thus the Byzantine Empire and transforming the Hagia Sophia to his main mosque. He successfully annexed Anatolia, the Black Sea and the Balkans. This medal was probably produced after the conquest of Trebizond (1461 AD) or after the death of Muhammad II. (1481 AD). The engraver may not have been Jean Tricaudet of Silongey whose name appear on the obverse, but another member of his family signing in his name.
